After two monster nights the Young Guns of Wine 2017 is a wrap. We were pretty happy to make to the Top 50 with our Gymkata Syrah 2016 and Admiral Ackbar Semillon 2016.
Our first wines from South Burnett are safely ensconced in bottle and ready to spread the love!
Sam and Victoria have spearheaded our Queensland production this year and the wines are looking sensational.
Admiral Adama Semillon 2017 – this year we have moved this wine north from NSW to its new delicious home in mighty Murgon. Skinsy but aromatic as per usual, our loveable rogue white is going to be popular again. Only 10 cases of joy with this one. Zero sulphur.
Tears of Makoto Rose 2017 – debuting our first rose using some crunchy Nebbiolo from South Burnett. This little gem is all rose hip and crab apple. Zero sulphur. 600 bottles.
Piss Christ Saperavi Nebbiolo Semillon 2017 – slurpy smasher made for the fridge. Saperavi suits this region so well, hanging onto acid and putting together a tongue lashing of tannin. Real dinner party starter this one, perfect after the Champagne but before the oysters. Zero sulphur. 1150 bottles.
Vintage is in full swing for Konpira Maru. It all kicked off on Australia Day/Invasion Day up in the South Burnett Region of Queensland. If you don’t know where that is, think Kingaroy (the home of peanuts and Joh Bjelke-Petersen, who was also a peanut) and the Yowie. Well to be exact the cockless Yowie, cockless due to the proclivity of local bogans to repeatably castrating the poor Yowie statue in Kilcoy.
South Burnett is a ridiculously beautiful part of the world, hot sure, but a nice dry heat. Not the humid heat that Queensland gets unfairly dismissed for. Oh and another thing, the place is full of epic old school Queensland pubs. Oh, and one more thing. It produces bloody awesome grapes, including the mighty and mysterious Saparavi. This variety has red skin and red flesh, loves the heat and has tannin on tannin. Tick! They do a good Semillon, and we love Semillon. So an absolute no brainer region for Konpira Maru.
Our base was Clovelly Estate in Murgon who have set up their winery in the historic South Burnett Co-Operative Dairy Association Factory.
The place is labyrinthine and just an awesome place to be. We set up in the barrel hall that looked over beautiful open woodland, just made for epic winemaking. And epic wines we made. We’ll be back with a full description when the labels are done.
Welcome to the fold El Pacu. Named after the feared vegetarian piranha of the Amazon, this puppy is loaded with natural acidity and a power-packed palate of white-fleshed fruits and a little nuttiness. All the deets direct from Sam…
100% Chardonnay from Toppers Mountain Vineyard, NSW. A beautiful site in the middle of nowhere that is farmed sustainably. The fruit for the Chardonnay was picked early and left in a cold room over night to retain freshness and keep the temperatures low for processing. 50% of the fruit was crushed and de-stemmed and the 50% was added to a stainless steel tank as whole bunches. After 7 days the wine was basket pressed and transferred back to stainless steel to finish fermentation. The wine then went through malolactic fermentation quite quickly without any racking taking place. It was left to age on full lees for 5 months, with lees stirring taking place for the two month and then left to settle for the remaining 3. One racking took place after this period and then it was bottled directly from tank, unfined and unfiltered. 386 bottles made.
All 2015s are sold out.
2016s are hitting on strong in October. On the roster:
Gymkata Shiraz (back by popular demand)*
Admiral Ackbar Semillon
Admiral Adama Semillon
*well no one actually demanded it but it sold really well
Have to love this time of year with all the new release wines hitting the shelves! We’re excited to be unleashing a few new labels in 2016 including our first from New England, NSW. All the wines we made out of there have come up an absolute treat. One of the first to be released will be “MK” our red blend of Nebbiolo, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Semillon. Should be out in October!
